Austin: the main character, Austin's goal is to protect his sister and to simply survive. His world is one of confusing heroics,
witnessed atrocities, and an inner struggle of faith in the God he worships. His own attraction to Faith makes it more difficult
for him to deal logically with issues at hand, often ending up in brash outbursts and savage exploits of bravery. He is clever,
yet doesn't always think things through. Out of his close circle of companions, he is the one most ample to lead them to their
doom.
Les: best friend of Austin, Les is clear-headed, cool under pressure, and deals with situations with logic and clarity.
He is persuasively controlling, often calling the shots without recognizing it. Everyone looks up to him, but he is the essence
of Austin's jealousy; although Les is in a relationship with Austin's sister, Austin's psyche is convinced Les is falling
for Faith, who is Austin's beloved.
Faith: a friend, she is empathetic, compassionate, and sympathetic, all at the same time. She doesn't deal with stress
very well, and often needs to be guided every step of the way. Her own dependency on others means that she is doomed if she
is ever abandoned. She suffers from the trauma of her own brother's death, and it eats her down slowly to a point of bewilderment.
She has no idea Austin harbors feelings for her.
Ashlie: Austin's sister, she is dating Les. Coming onto the scene late, with no experience in what's going on, her own
journey is a learning process as she discovers what is happening all around her. She and Faith stick close together while
Les and Austin lead them around. Ashlie isn't too well at formulating plans for survival, but can stick to them easily without
screwing it up. She is quiet, mulling over her mother's suicide, and the murder of her father. She secretly deals with a fermenting
hate for Austin as she does not really understand all that is happening, does not understand why Austin had to kill the parents
they loved so much.
Shelley - a pilot, Shelley befriends the survivors as they journey together to what is hopefully safety. Shelley has a
voice and tone demanding authority, and takes it up willingly. Everyone trusts his cool head, logical thinking, and his ability
to keep them in the air.
